Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase 2 enters pre-commissioning: what the signalling trials meant

Metro Line 9 Phase 2 moved into signalling integration and pre-commissioning trials in September, requiring a temporary early-morning service adjustment on connected lines.

Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase 2 moved into a pre-commissioning stage in September 2026 as signalling integration and train trials began. The work was aimed at connecting three additional stations to the operational Phase 1 section and coordinating the new section with Metro Lines 2A and 7.

Why the morning block was needed

MMRDA announced a special morning block from September 13 to 20 as Phase 2 approached commissioning. Reporting on the subsequent integration exercise said passenger services on Lines 2A, 7 and Line 9 Phase 1 started at 6:30 am during the trial window so engineers could work with a controlled, non-revenue testing period before passenger operations.

The adjustment was temporary and related to system integration; it was not a permanent change to the normal timetable. Commuters should therefore avoid treating an old trial notice as a current daily service schedule.

What “pre-commissioning” means

Before a new metro section opens to passengers, the operator must validate signalling, train control, communication, power, platform equipment and operating procedures. Integration is especially important when a new section is connected to lines already carrying passengers, because the system must coordinate routes, headways and safety protections across the junction.

The signalling software and controlled train tests are milestones, but they do not by themselves announce a commercial opening date. Safety certification, inspections and the operator’s final public timetable still matter.

The Line 9 context

Line 9 is being developed as an extension of the Red Line 7 corridor towards Mira-Bhayandar. Phase 1 between Dahisar East and Kashigaon entered operation earlier in 2026. Phase 2 adds further stations and requires integration with the existing network before passenger service can begin.

For commuters, the useful question is not only “when will the line open?” but also which stations, interchange points and feeder routes will be available on the first day. MMRDA and the operating agency should be treated as the final authority for the launch date and timetable.
