Diwali diya decoration ideas
Clay diyas work well for a traditional display, while electric diyas are useful near curtains, children, pets or a busy walkway. Paint only the outside of a diya, let it dry fully and keep the wick and oil area clear of paint or glitter.
Three easy arrangements
Make a doorway line with diyas placed at equal distance; create a small circle around a rangoli; or group five diyas on a metal or ceramic tray as a table centrepiece. Use flowers around the tray rather than directly beside every flame.
Oil, wick and placement
Fill diyas on a stable surface, use an appropriate cotton wick and keep the flame away from fabric, paper, dry petals and electrical wires. A tray makes it easier to move the display and clean spilled oil. Keep water or a safe way to extinguish a flame nearby.
Example for children
Children can paint the outer rim and arrange unlit diyas by colour. An adult should fill, light and move them. Battery LED diyas can provide a similar glow for a child's room or photo corner.
Never leave a diya burning unattended. Put out flames before sleeping or leaving home and dispose of used oil responsibly.
